The Mpumalanga Sizakala Centre project was initiated by the eThekwini Municipality Economic Development Unit following the development of the Mpumalanga New Town Centre Precinct Plan. This plan forms part of eThekwini Municipality’s Urban Network Strategy, funded through National Treasury’s Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant. Mpumalanga local area is located within the Outer West planning region of eThekwini Municipality. It is approximately 45km west of the Durban CBD. The Mpumalanga area is home to approximately 120,000 people, some of are settled formally either in urban villages or townships or on small agricultural holdings, but many of whom are settled in informal transitional, peri-urban and rural areas. The Mpumalanga town centre precinct plan was developed to guide the establishment of a new civic and commercial heart for Mpumalanga, which is a growing area with plans for new low and middle class housing and commercial areas. Located along the MR385 (Mthoko Mkhize Drive), the town centre precinct incorporates a new shopping centre and areas proposed for a much needed future civic services centre, which would include the Mpumalanga Thusong Centre.

The Bridge City Activity Hub concept was developed in the context of the Integrated Bridge City KwaMashu Precinct Plan and is part of the Bridge City KwaMashu Open Space program. In context of the Bridge City development, the adjacent Piesangs river floodplain is still the insurmountable southern barrier. Over a length of nearly 2 km (Bhejane road to Malandela road), no pathway or bridge over the Piesangs river allows for the population of KwaMashu to reach the facilities of Bridge City. A developed vibrant Piesangs River Park has the potential to truly bring together Bridge City and KwaMashu. Therefore, the Piesangs River Park project is crucial for the vision of Bridge City and the project is supported by National Treasury Neighborhood Development Program Grant (NDPG) as it is suitably located within an 800-meter radius of the Hub heart namely Bridge City. NDPG funding is been made available for the development of a Youth Development Centre (KwaMashu Safehub) with associated sports facilities to form the center of the Bridge City Activity Hub. The project is directly derived with the following;
Creating Sustainable Livelihoods: activity hub initiative seeks to aid poverty alleviation, improve skills
shortage in the area and priorities Green Economy initiatives.
A Socially Cohesive City: Through inclusion of the Youth Development Centre and the Go! Durban Cycle Academy the idea is of empowering and development of the youth skills base from either strength whether be it in sporting or entrepreneurship from the vulnerable groups (idle youth).
Creating a Safer City: The Youth Centre follows the Safe Hub philosophy. The Safe Hub is designed to provide an adequately equipped and emotionally safe space where young people can access quality after-school programs. A similar successful model of a Safe Hub ran by the SAFE-HUB NON-PROFIT
COMPANY demonstrated a significant 40% reduction of crime in the vicinity of the established YouthCentre./p>
